Mark 10:1-12

And from there he set out and came to the region of Judea and the other side of the Jordan, and again crowds came together to him. And again, as he was accustomed to do, he began to teach them. And they asked him if it was permitted for a man to divorce his wife, in order to test him. And he answered and said to them, “What did Moses command you?” So they said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.” But Jesus said to them, “He wrote this commandment for you because of your hardness of heart. But from the beginning of creation ‘he made them male and female. Because of this a man will leave his father and mother and will be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh,’ so that they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, man must not separate.” And in the house again the disciples began to ask him about this. And he said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. And if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

How is your World View Formed?

Mark 10:1-12 Jesus teaches about the sacred covenent of marriage

1 And he left there and went to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan, and crowds gathered to him again. And again, as was his custom, he taught them. 2 And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” 3 He answered them, “What did Moses command you?” 4 They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.” 5 And Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. 6 But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ 7 ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, 8 and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. 9 What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” 10 And in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. 11 And he said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her, 12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

Questions for Reflection

  • What typically happens when the pharisees show up around Jesus?
  • This trick question about divorce was probably a popular topic with many rabbis at the time. There were two schools of thought related to the study of the Torah:
    • Hillel -allowed divorce for even trivial offenses, such as burning a meal
    • Shammai - a man may only divorce his wife for a serious transgression
  • See Deuteronomy 22 & 24 for a reference to what they wosuld have been discussing.
  • How does Jesus respond?
  • So, what do you think about this? Did God ordane or design divorce?
  • Take a closer look at Deuteronomy 22:22. How do you think God view’s marriage?
  • Why does God take marriage so seriously?
  • What is a “biblical world view”?
  • How do you view the world?
