Mark 11:1-11

And when they came near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the village before you, and right away as you enter into it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it. And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say ‘The Lord has need of it, and will send it here again at once.’ ” And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. And some of those who were standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” So they told them, just as Jesus had said, and they allowed them to take it. And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, and he sat on it. And many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches they had cut from the fields. And those who went ahead and those who were following were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest heaven!” And he went into Jerusalem to the temple, and after looking around at everything, because the hour was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

How would I Respond?

Mark 11:1–2 (ESV):

1 Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples 2 and said to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it.

  • Why does Mark not tell us which two disciples were sent?
  • What is the significance of the “colt…on which no one has ever sat”?

Mark 11:3 (ESV):

3 If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.’ ”

  • This is the only place Mark uses the “Lord” title for Jesus. These disciples were following the call of the Lord to go where they were not known, to be obedient.
  • Have you ever been asked to do something that just didn’t make sense or might have seemed odd to others? Tell us.
  • How might Jesus ask you to do something that might seem odd to others?

Mark 11:4–6 (ESV):

4 And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. 5 And some of those standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” 6 And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go.

  • How (or by whom) do you see faith illustrated here?

Mark 11:7 (ESV):

7 And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it.

  • Zechariah 9:9
  • The donkey is a working animal used to carry heavy loads.

Mark 11:8–9 (ESV):

8 And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. 9 And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

  • This would probably been, at least in part, a rather large group or entourage traveling with Jesus.
  • Why do you think they threw their cloaks and palm branches on the road?

Mark 11:10 (ESV):

10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!”

  • What does “Hosanna” mean in Hebrew?

Mark 11:11 (ESV):

11 And he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. And when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

  • As Jesus conducted His recon the temple, what did he see?

Thoughts for Reflection

  • Jesus had been preparing for this mission since time eternal; since before the serpant whispered to Adam and Eve.
  • This plan had always been in place; it was not “plan b”.
  • Mark writes in a way to always ask “What would you do?”
  • What will you do when God is calling you?
  • Your speach, your abilitues, your deficits do not matter when Jesus is sending you to do something.
  • How will you respond to Him?
