Esther 8:1-17

On that day King Ahasuerus gave Queen Esther the house of Haman, the enemy of the Jews; and Mordecai came before the king, for Esther had told what he was to her. And the king removed his signet ring that he had taken away from Haman, and he gave it to Mordecai. So Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman. And Esther again spoke before the king, and she fell before his feet and wept, pleading for his grace to avert Haman the Agagite’s evil plan and the plot that he devised against the Jews. And the king held out to Esther the scepter of gold, and Esther rose and stood before the king, and she said, “If it is good to the king, and if I have found favor before him, and if the king is pleased with this matter, and I have his approval, let an edict be written to revoke the letters of the plans of Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews that are in all the provinces of the king. For how can I bear to look on the disaster that will find my people, and how can I bear to look on the destruction of my family?” And King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther and to Mordecai the Jew, “Look, I have given Haman’s house to Esther, and they have hanged him on the gallows because he plotted against the Jews. Write as you see fit concerning the Jews in the name of the king, and seal it with the king’s signet ring; for a decree that is written in the name of the king and sealed with the king’s signet ring cannot be revoked.” And the secretaries of the king were summoned at that time, in the third month, which is in the month of Sivan on the twenty-third day, and an edict was written according to all that Mordecai commanded, to the Jews and to the governors and satraps and officials of the provinces from India to Cush—one hundred and twenty-seven provinces—each province according to its own script and to every people in their own language, and to the Jews in their own script and language. And he wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus, and he sealed the letters with the king’s signet ring and sent them by couriers on horses, riding on royal horses bred by racing mares. In them the king allowed the Jews who were in every city to assemble and defend their lives, to destroy and kill and annihilate any army of any people or province attacking them, including women and children, and to plunder their spoil, in one day in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar. A copy of the edict was to be given as law in each province to inform all the people, so that the Jews would be ready on that day to avenge themselves from their enemies. The mounted couriers on the royal horses went out without delay, urged by the king’s word. The law was given in the citadel of Susa. Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal clothing of blue cloth and white linen, and a great crown of gold and a robe of fine white linen and purple, and the city of Susa was shouting and rejoicing. For the Jews, there was light and gladness, joy and honor. In every province and city, wherever the king’s edict and his law came, there was gladness and joy for the Jews, a banquet and a holiday, and many of the people from the country were posing as Jews because the fear of the Jews had fallen on them.

Reversal of Fate: Esther and Mordecai Save Jewish People with New Royal Decree

Mordecai’s Promotion

Esther 8:1–2 (ESV):

1 On that day King Ahasuerus gave to Queen Esther the house of Haman, the enemy of the Jews. And Mordecai came before the king, for Esther had told what he was to her. 2 And the king took off his signet ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it to Mordecai. And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.

  • What is the king signifying by giving Mordecai his signet ring?

Esther’s Plea

Esther 8:3 (ESV):

3 Then Esther spoke again to the king. She fell at his feet and wept and pleaded with him to avert the evil plan of Haman the Agagite and the plot that he had devised against the Jews.

  • What is Esther pleading for?

The King’s Response

Esther 8:4–8 (ESV):

4 When the king held out the golden scepter to Esther, Esther rose and stood before the king. 5 And she said, “If it please the king, and if I have found favor in his sight, and if the thing seems right before the king, and I am pleasing in his eyes, let an order be written to revoke the letters devised by Haman the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, which he wrote to destroy the Jews who are in all the provinces of the king. 6 For how can I bear to see the calamity that is coming to my people? Or how can I bear to see the destruction of my kindred?” 7 Then King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther and to Mordecai the Jew, “Behold, I have given Esther the house of Haman, and they have hanged him on the gallows, because he intended to lay hands on the Jews. 8 But you may write as you please with regard to the Jews, in the name of the king, and seal it with the king’s ring, for an edict written in the name of the king and sealed with the king’s ring cannot be revoked.”

  • Now that Haman is dead and his plans are revealed, why can the king not simply revoke the edict?
    • Look back at Esther 1:19.
    • and Esther 8:8
  • So, what does the king suggest?
  • One eternal law is joined by another eternal law. Do you know the eternal spiritual laws of which this speaks?

The two laws and the penalty for sin

Firstly, let’s look at these two laws in regards to the penalty for sin. The first law (as pictured by Haman’s law decreeing death upon the Jewish race) was summed up by Ezekiel in the very short and sweet sentence ‘The soul who sins will die’(Ezek 18:4) or as Paul wrote in Romans 6:23 ‘the wages of sin is death.’ That is the decree from God and it is set in concrete. It states that the payment for sin is death and this is speaking of both physical and spiritual death. Like the Persian laws of old, this cannot be revoked or annulled, and has been decreed upon the entire human race. That, my friend, is the bad news. Now for the good news!

The same King of heaven who decreed the first law has also given one that brings freedom, joy and eternal life! The new decree states that ‘that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved’ for ’ the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. ’ (Romans 10:9, 6:23). Just as the Jews were given the second decree that could bring deliverance from the first, so this eternal decree has gone throughout the world so that all who believe may find grace, forgiveness and life!

The two laws and the power of sin

The first is called ‘the law of sin and death’. The second is ‘the law of the Spirit of life’. Both are in operation at the same time and both influence the believer. The first operates through man’s fallen nature pulling him down and leading to sin. It is summed up in Romans chapter 7 with Paul saying “I do not understand my own action for I do not do what I want and I do the very thing that I hate. I can will what is right but I cannot do it.” (Romans 7:18-20). Never forget that this law exists. Without living in a dependency upon the Holy Spirit whom God has given all believers, all that even a true child of God can expect is failure. It is a law. It changes not! It brings sin, failure and discouragement. Don’t be surprised when this law operates in you!

Yet praise God that a second law has been enacted that is more powerful and when taken into account brings freedom from the first law! Like Mordecai writing the new law to grant freedom and liberty to the Jews condemned to die under Haman’s law, so God has given a new decree that declares that the Spirit whom he has given believers can and will free them from the bondage of the law of sin and death.

New Decree

Esther 8:9–14 (ESV):

9 The king’s scribes were summoned at that time, in the third month, which is the month of Sivan, on the twenty-third day. And an edict was written, according to all that Mordecai commanded concerning the Jews, to the satraps and the governors and the officials of the provinces from India to Ethiopia, 127 provinces, to each province in its own script and to each people in its own language, and also to the Jews in their script and their language. 10 And he wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus and sealed it with the king’s signet ring. Then he sent the letters by mounted couriers riding on swift horses that were used in the king’s service, bred from the royal stud, 11 saying that the king allowed the Jews who were in every city to gather and defend their lives, to destroy, to kill, and to annihilate any armed force of any people or province that might attack them, children and women included, and to plunder their goods, 12 on one day throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar. 13 A copy of what was written was to be issued as a decree in every province, being publicly displayed to all peoples, and the Jews were to be ready on that day to take vengeance on their enemies. 14 So the couriers, mounted on their swift horses that were used in the king’s service, rode out hurriedly, urged by the king’s command. And the decree was issued in Susa the citadel.

  • So, what is happening here?
  • What do you think would happen if the people (both Jews and citizens) ignored the second law?

Rejoicing Among the Jews

Esther 8:15–17 (ESV):

15 Then Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal robes of blue and white, with a great golden crown and a robe of fine linen and purple, and the city of Susa shouted and rejoiced. 16 The Jews had light and gladness and joy and honor. 17 And in every province and in every city, wherever the king’s command and his edict reached, there was gladness and joy among the Jews, a feast and a holiday. And many from the peoples of the country declared themselves Jews, for fear of the Jews had fallen on them.

  • Look back at Esther 3:13-15; compare the reaction in Susa to the first decree verses the reaction to the second.
    • The bewildered city had become the joyous city!
  • Why did ‘many from the peoples of the country declare themselves Jews’?

Thoughts for Reflection

  • Have you come to realize that the sentence of death that hung over your head has been taken and annulled by the one who died and paid the price for your sin on the cross?
  • Have you accepted by faith, that pardon?
  • Have you recognized that the law of the spirit of life can set you free from the law of sin and death?
  • Non-Christians watch you as they do me. They want to see whether we have something that is real and worthwhile. And joy is contagious!
  • Are you joyful?
  • Are you being contagious?
  • Do you have the urgency like couriers who rode on royal horses to deliver the decree?
